Recently, UC High was declared one of the best schools in the state and nation by the Union Tribune, and was also ranked highly by the Washington Post and U.S. News, according to Principal Jeff Olivero.
“Every year, a number of newspaper publications go about ranking, in some systematic way, schools within a nation and a state. Recently, US News and the Washington Post began to look at different criteria for ranking the schools and much of it had to do with considering the number of students taking the AP courses relative to the number of students a school has. They’re also beginning to look at other factors such as graduation rates, programs a school offers, etc.,” said Olivero. This year, UC High ranked 460 in the nation and 98 in the state, according to U.S. News (usnews.com). The Washington Post ranked UC High as 607 in the nation (washingtonpost.com).
“It’s a good honor [to be ranked highly]; it’s another way to evaluate and see how we’re comparing relative to other schools in the country,” said Olivero. “The exciting part, of course, is that we did very well in relationship to our friendly competitions, the other Big 5 schools [La Jolla High, Scripps Ranch, Mira Mesa High, and Patrick Henry High]… we did very well in relationship to their numbers and ours,” said Olivero.
Senior Helen Nguyen is proud of UC High for being ranked so highly. “We feel very proud of our school and it’s nice to be have our efforts recognized,” she said.
