Taste of the Triangle will celebrate its twentieth anniversary tonight at the UCSD Faculty Club, according to the EdUCate website (uc-educate.org).
Hosted by EdUCate, the event will feature food tastings from over 20 restaurants, over 100 silent auction baskets, dancing, and four hours of live entertainment. The evening will begin with a VIP reception from 6-7 p.m. and continue on to the main event from 7-10:30 p.m. All proceeds from the event will benefit UC public schools and the EdUCate Math Academy, an after-school tutoring program.
The UC High Culinary Club will be serving food alongside numerous local restaurants in San Diego at Taste of the Triangle, according to Culinary Club Advisor Jessica Huntsberger. The UC High Jazz Band will perform at Taste of the Triangle, according to Band Director Brandon Corenman. Selected members of the California Scholarship Federation (CSF) will volunteer at this year’s Taste of the Triangle, according to CSF Advisor Lauriann Stanley.
EdUCate has given the UC High Culinary Club a 300 dollar grant to produce 500 servings of any dish for guests to sample at Taste of the Triangle, according to Huntsberger. This is the second year Culinary Club has served food at the event. Last year, the club prepared Brazilian Beef Stroganoff, a family recipe from Huntsberger. This year, the club will prepare Sweet and Sour Meatballs, a family recipe from Sophomore Robbi Latada.
“We are using my recipe because last year, we used a personal recipe from Ms. Huntsberger, and this year’s president wanted to continue with that idea of using a family recipe. It makes the event feel more personal for us and motivates us to show off the cooking abilities of our club. The recipe is a dish that my mom makes for dinner every so often. I always loved eating it when she made it so I wanted to make it for everyone else to try,” said Latada.
The restaurant French Gourmet donated chef hats and jackets for club members to wear during the event. “Taste of the Triangle is an amazing opportunity for Culinary Club members to work alongside and meet local chefs,” said Huntsberger.
The VIP reception will feature a film made by Junior Evan Esguerra. “The film, Taste of the Triangle: 20 Years in the Making (unofficial title), is a short documentary/tribute to the past board members of EdUCate,” explained Esguerra. “The film will feature some history of how EdUCate and Taste of the Triangle were founded and insight on how some board members became a part of EdUCate.”
Esguerra was invited to make a short film by the board members of EdUCate because they showed interest in his previous work presented at the Museum of Contemporary Art in La Jolla. Esguerra’s project took three months. “This is a very challenging project that puts a lot of pressure on me, but it’s opportunities like this that push the limits of my filmmaking ability,” said Esguerra. “If my film receives positive reviews, it will help me get my name out there so students, staff or anyone can employ my services.”
Taste of the Triangle will feature tastings from local restaurants in San Diego. Ahi Sushi & Grill, Amaya La Jolla, Bite of Boston, Boudin Bakery Cafe, Carriage Trade Catering, Car’s Jars, Corner Bakery Cafe, Cozymel’s, Dan Diegos, Eureka!, Leucadia Pizzeria & Italian Restaurant, Marina Kitchen, Outcast Grill, Prepkitchen and Whisknladle, Specialty’s Cafe & Bakery, The French Gourmet, The Melting Pot, UC High Culinary Club, and the Veggie Grill will offer food samples. General Admission Tickets cost 75 dollars, while staff tickets cost 50 dollars (uc-educate.org).
The event’s motto is to “Honor the Past, Celebrate the Present, and Build the Future,” according to the EdUCate website (uc-educate.org).
