UC High’s ASB held a food drive to participate in the Jacobs and Cushman San Diego Food Bank’s “Martin Luther King Jr. Freedom From Hunger” High School ASB Fifth Annual Challenge. Over 90 San Diego County high schools were invited to join the challenge between January 20 and February 3.
“We [ASB] like to participate in one community activity every month to take pride in our school and get publicity,” said ASB Community Involvement Commissioner Jackie Vallon.
San Diego’s Food Bank is expected to distribute about 20 million pounds of food this year. Almost half goes to kids 18 years old or younger (sandiegofoodbank.org).
“Any type of food you can keep, such as canned goods and soups, are the kinds of things we’re asking for,” said ASB Community Involvement Commissioner Daniella Veloria. “Anything will help.”
The top four schools that collect the most food during their food drive will receive a cash donation to their ASB fund. All schools that register and hold a food drive will be entered in a drawing to win the “Titanium Package School Dance,” valued at 10,000 dollars (sandiegofoodbank.org).
“If we are one of the top four schools or the school that wins the ‘Titanium Package School Dance,’ we are going to use the money to have a Sadie Hawkins Dance; the rest will be put towards the individual classes,” said Vallon
