On April 18, UC High’s ArtsTech Academy students exhibited work in the San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art (MCASD) through a new partnership that aims to give students access to viewing art museum works.

The Senior ArtsTech Class took two field trips to the Lifelike show at MCASD, explained ArtsTech Teacher Lauriel Adsit. ArtsTech students were then informed that they would take part in displaying their own work in a one-day show at the same museum. Students had the option to work in groups or individually; the majority chose to work in groups.

The students had three weeks to prepare for the show, explained Adsit. Students were able to show anything from poetry, to sculptures, to animation. Some students even dressed up as Barbie and Ken dolls and presented themselves. Others made an eight-foot-tall tree out of recycled bottles.

The show was coordinated through a partnership with the museum called the ESP Program, or the Extended School Partnership Program, according to the MCASD website (mcasd.org). The new program has been partnered with ArtsTech for three months now, according to Adsit. The ESP program also extends to other high and middle schools (mcasd.org)

“All the work was inspired by the theme of Lifelike. It was about exploring reality,” said Adsit.  Lifelike contained works by over 50 artists, all of which either captured a moment or played with the scale of perceptions of objects, according to the Union Tribune (utsandiego.com).
