ASB hosted its first annual College Fair this past Tuesday, November 5 in the quad. All teachers were invited to take their students to the College Fair during periods 1 through 4. The College Fair concluded at lunch with a special presentation in the auditorium by Guest Speaker Rob Humbrach, who is the founder of Passport Admissions, an admissions counseling company.

Representatives from over seven local, state, and out-of-state universities and colleges gathered to answer questions and reach out to prospective students at UC High. According to ASB President Nikolina Zenovic, who organized the fair, UC San Diego, UC Irvine, SD State University, University of Arizona, Lafayette College, and the Mesa, Miramar and San Diego City Community Colleges participated in the fair.

ASB’s College Fair marked the conclusion of college month. For the past five weeks, representatives from Wesleyan University, San Diego State University, UC Los Angeles, Elon University, Cal Poly Pomona, Vanderbilt University, Swathmore College, Washington University, Mt. Saint Mary’s College, Arizona State University, Northern Arizona State, Mass College of Pharm & Health Sciences, University of Connecticut, UC Santa Barbara, Caltech, Williams College, and UC Santa Cruz have visited UC High during lunch in front of the media center (sandi.net).

According to Zenovic, ASB hosted a college fair to get students more involved in and exposed to options for college. “Many of the individual, brief college visits to UC High, during lunch, only draw a few curious students. A larger and longer fair is more central and attracts a larger crowd of students,” said Zenovic, “Many students were exposed to colleges they had never heard of before.”

Many seniors applying for college noted the benefits of attending a college fair. “It helped me get a better idea of the colleges. It lets them know who I am. It puts me in contact with them,” said Senior Jeremy Kern.

“People can answer your questions directly. You can get a better feel of what kind of people are associated with that college,” said Senior Emily Halaka.

“A college fair enables students to get valuable information and direct contact with numerous universities and colleges. I want students to have the opportunity to get face-to-face, one-on-one conversations with colleges in order to get all their questions answered,” said Zenovic. According to Zenovic, many of the representatives are involved in the admissions process and will actually be reading applications.
