UC High’s numerous dance teams performed at a recital on Thursday, April 28 and Friday April 29 at 7 p.m. in the auditorium. It was an opportunity to show what they have been working on all year.
According to Dance Team Captain Shannon Bride, the dance show featured Dance Team, Polynesian Dance, Tahitian and Haka Dance, All Male Dance Team, Drill Team and Diverse Dance Crew. Doors opened at 6:30 p.m., and the show lasted about two hours.
“The recital is an event dedicated to the various dance groups at UC High. The teams get to showcase all they have been working out throughout the year. For example, Dance Team had the team dances, but there were also a lot of new [previously] unseen dances [that were] performed,” said Bride.
“I was most excited to show parents what we had been working on this year, and to be given the chance to bond with the other dance teams. The recital showed a variety of dance styles, from hula to hip hop to jazz. The big point of it was to give parents the opportunity to watch performances,” said Polynesian Dance Team Captain Nadia Ortega.
“The recital really showed that everyone’s hard work from the year finally payed off. It was so fun to see everyone doing what they love and appreciating what each team did. I can’t dance a lot of the ways the other teams do, so it was a great day for the teams to really show what they are good at,” said Dance Team Captain Taylor Martin.
According to Ortega, the hardest parts of preparing for the recital were organizing costumes and dances in time and making sure everything was ready for the big day. Martin said that one of the difficulties in preparing for the show was coordinating between all of the different teams, since it was such a large production. She aimed to make it an interesting and quality show for the audience, so getting all of the dances to look their best was a challenge.
“The dance recital was great! It was great to see how we have so much diversity at this school. The production this year was good and it’s too bad if you didn’t show up. My favorite dance was either Polynesian or All Male because of how synced they are,” said Junior Samuel Gordon.
